James Thomson was born in Ednam in 1700. He was soon moved to Jedburgh with his parents. He was educated at Southdean, Jedburgh and Edinburgh University. His most famous works are probably the words of 'Rule Britannia', and his quartet 'The Seasons'. He died in 1748 and is buried in Richmond Churchyard. An obelisk in his memory can be seen just outside Kelso on the Ednam Road.
